The early days
Huis ter Lucht has been existing as a cheese farm for hundreds of years. Therefore, it appears on many water charts. In the past, our Calslagenpolder was connected to the Amstel river. When there was too much water in the polder, the locks opened and the water flowed into the Amstel. This was called 'luchten', hence the name 'Huis ter Lucht'.
Cow in the pasture
Cows should be in the pasture and so do our cows in spring, summer and autumn. After a long winter, it's always a special moment when the stable opens its doors. The ladies get up quickly and rush outside mooing loudly. This is always a special sight.
Animal-friendly
We think it's important that our animals have a life that is as nice as possible. Of course we have cows because they produce milk, but there's a difference between sustainable milking and 'getting everything out of it'. We don't aim for the last milk drop and that's why our cows live a happier and longer life. The choice for MRY-cows (a Dutch breed that originated from the area between the rivers Meuse, Rhine and IJssel) therefore is, in our opinion, a logical one: this red-and-white breed produces less milk than the black-and-white one, but the milk is 'fuller' in terms of composition. Because of that, with this milk one can produce cheese with a richer and fuller taste.
Meadow birds
Lots of meadow birds hatch on our land. Therefore, if possible, we mow the grass late in springtime, so that the eggs have enough time to be hatched out and the young birds can grow up safely. In addition, volunteers search the land for nests and nest protection is placed around them. In consequence, the cows don't step on the nests, but nicely graze around them.
Colorful ditch sides
While manuring our land, we skip a large strip next to the ditch. Therefore, lots of different flowers and plants grow there. There is always something flowering and this, of course, is a wonderful sight. It also attracts bees, providing delicious honey. We also sell this in our farm shop.
